Paul practices tax and estate law in Calgary with Counsel West Law. He obtained his law degree from Queen's University in 1977 and was then called to the bars of Ontario, Yukon and Alberta.

From 1982 to 1991, he practiced tax in Calgary with the accounting firm of Deloitte & Touche and was made partner in 1988. His law practice since 1991 has concentrated on advising families on tax, estate planning and succession planning for their private businesses and investments.

Paul has been President and Director of the Calgary Estate Planning Council, Canadian Petroleum Tax Society and was Chair of the Canadian Bar Association (Wills and Trusts section for Southern Alberta) in 2006-2008.
